Computer Hardware
Make sure your computer’s specifications are sufficient for your Internet connection. There’s no point in having a fast connection if your computer cannot handle it.
Web Browser
Download an open-source Web browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome. These browsers often provide greater functionality and can handle graphics and videos well.
Clearing Browser Storage
Delete your temporary Internet files, cache, browsing and download history and cookies. This option will typically be under the “Tools” drop-down list in your browser.
Connections
Use a high-speed Ethernet cable to connect to your modem rather than a wireless connection or, alternatively, move the wireless router closer to your computer. Changing the channel on which your wireless signal is broadcast can avoid interference from other modems or mobile devices.
Decrease Loading Times
Disable sound, video and graphics in your browser. This will make your Internet load Web pages much faster than usual, although you will then miss out on multimedia content.
Maximize RAM
Close any other programs that are running at the same time as your Internet browser. This will not only stop them from accessing the Internet but will also provide more RAM for your browser to use.
Usage Times
Use the Internet at off-peak times, especially for more demanding uses such as downloading or streaming videos. Evenings and weekends usually have the slowest Internet times. It is a good idea to download large files overnight, when fewer people are using your provider’s bandwidth.
Update Hardware
Upgrade your modem. An outdated modem can hinder an Internet connection, so make sure that yours is up-to-date. Your Internet service provider will be able to recommend a modem if you contact them.
Scanning the Computer
Scan your computer regularly for viruses, spyware and malware. These programs can often hijack your Internet connection.
Increase Your DNS Cache (Warning: Experienced Users Only)
Increase your DNS cache by navigating to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters’ in your Windows registry. Create DWORD values for the following key classes:
CacheHashTableBucketSize = 1
CacheHashTableSize = 180
MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit = ff00
MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit = 12d
