Factors That Determine Internet Speed

Your Internet Service Provider

Your Internet service provider is one of the main factors in your Internet speed. Some Internet services are faster than others. If yours isn’t moving as fast as you would like it to, contact your service provider to see if there is a faster Internet service to which you can upgrade. If not, consider some of the other factors that can influence your Web speed.

Your Wireless Router

Your wireless router can certainly affect the speed of your Internet. If your router hasn’t been reset in a while, is slightly damaged or is out of date, the speed of your Internet may suffer. Try resetting your router and restarting your computer on those extra slow days. If this doesn’t work, consider upgrading your router for a newer model, if you have had it for more than a couple of years.

If you can stand it, try plugging your computer directly into the modem. Wired connections move faster than wireless connections.

Your Computer

Your computer can also make a difference in how fast your Internet goes. If you have an older computer with a slower processor, or less RAM, this can make a real difference in the speed of your Internet. The more RAM your computer has, the faster your Internet should be — if there are no other factors influencing your speed.

Your Neighborhood

If you live in a neighborhood where you and all of your neighbors are using cable Internet, you are bound to experience some slowdowns — especially at peak usage times. If this sounds like a problem you have, consider switching service providers. If this isn’t an option for you, consider using the Internet at times when there is less activity in your neighborhood.
